Car and Van Rental in Mallorca

Mallorca, also spelt Majorca, is the largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands which include IbizaMenorca and Formentera. The hottest months are July and August, but the temperature in spring and early autumn is dry and pleasant and great for hiking and sightseeing. The island is about 80 kms from one end to the other, but it has 550 kilometres of coastline, made up of rocky coves with sandy beaches and limestone cliffs.

Hire a car so you can explore the many quaint hillside villages, hidden beaches and stunning panoramic views from the rugged and dramatic western peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana, an official UNESCO World Heritage site.  The Enterprise Rent-A-Car branch is conveniently located at Mallorca's international airport so you can pick up your rental on arrival.

Discover Mallorca

Before you head off to explore the island, it's worth spending some time visiting Palma de Mallorca. Don't miss the atmospheric old town with its narrow streets, the Gothic-style Cathedral of Santa Maria which dominates the skyline, the unusual circular Bellver Castle to the west of the town centre, and the 11th century Arab Baths.

Drive out of the centre and head for some of the best beaches in the Med, perfect for watersports or just soaking up the sun. For fabulous views, drive up the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along the entire west side of the island, stopping off at some very pretty villages along the way. These include Soller, with its famous orange tram that connects the town to the port, Fornalutx considered by many to be the prettiest village in Spain and, on the southwestern tip of the island, Puerto de Andratx with its glamorous yachts and upmarket shops.

Mallorca for Families

There are two water parks on the island, both within a 20-minute drive of Palma. Aqualand El Arenal and Western Water Park both offer a variety of water slides, wave pools, and other activities for all age groups. Palma Aquarium, home to over 8,000 marine animals,  is a fun and educational day out with the kids learning about the varieties of marine animals and their habitats.

Kids will love the tram from Soller, the trip lasts 30 minutes and takes you through the historic streets of Soller down to the coast where you'll find a sandy beach and lots of restaurants around the Marina. On the other side of the island you can visit the spectacular Caves of Drach and the Caves of Arta. Young children may need to be carried as the tours involve a lot of walking and climbing of stairs, but it's well worth it to see the impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes.

Mallorca even has its own theme park, the very popular Katmandu Park in Magaluf is great for kids of all ages with a variety of rides, attractions, and shows.

Best Beaches in Mallorca

Cala Llamp and Cala Marmassen are on the southwest coast, sandwiched between the sea and the cliffs. These coves are mainly rocky, so not ideal for families, but the water is crystal clear and great for snorkelling and other water sports.

If you want something more child-friendly with golden sands and shallow water surrounded by nature, pack a picnic and head to Cala S’Amarador on the southeast coast in the Mondrago Natural Park. Alternatively, head north east to Cala Torta or Playa de S'Arenalet for beaches off the beaten track which are perfect for families and less crowded than the better-known beaches.

For those more interested in beach clubs, sun loungers and food and drinks on tap, Alcúdia bay and its many beaches on the north coast is the place for you.

Driving in Mallorca

In Mallorca, as in the rest of Spain, they drive on the right-hand side of the road. This is sometimes hard to remember on smaller road and roundabouts, so drive carefully.

  • Priority rules: As a general rule you give way to the right at intersections. On a roundabout, cars already on the roundabout have priority.
  • Speed limits are slightly lower than in the UK so watch out for signs.
  • Seatbelts must be worn both in the front and back seats.
  • Children who are shorter than 135 cm (4 feet, 5 inches) must use an approved child seat or harness. If you need one, you can reserve and pay for your child car seat when you are booking your hire car.
  • It's illegal to use a mobile phone when driving, unless you have a hands free system.

Parking

If you park on blue or dotted green lines, you must get a ticket from the machine. Green is generally for residents, but can be used by visitors, as long as they pay and display. Parking is usually free on Sundays and holidays, but check the machine as this varies by town and area.
